چکیده

Seed-borne fungal pathogens present significant constrain to the production and conservation of many seed crops including cowpea. Infection mature seeds by such could result in mycotoxin contamination, loss viability, decay seeds. This study aimed identify seed-borne fungi on 200 accessions cowpea under cold storage at CSIR-Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute (PGRRI), Ghana. Also, antifungal effect Piper nigrum, Xylopia aethiopica, Aframomum melegueta, fresh leaves Cymbopogon citratus aqueous extracts (100% w/v) major identified was determined. Seven species belonging five genera were from evaluated. However, diversity infection levels pathogenic recorded lower than that saprophytic indicating minimal capacity spread field. Aqueous extract melegueta inhibited growth Fusarium verticillioides 98.40%, Colletotrichum sp. 97.83%, Aspergillus niger 94.70%, flavus 63.38%. The only other colony above 60% nigrum which 71.7% 63.47%. Due benign environment non-target organisms, its use as a protectant is highly recommended. Further studies establish spectrum activity dose are

Isolation and Characterization of Four Isoinhibitors from Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) Seeds

Four isoinhibitors of trypsin have been isolated from the cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., in a highly purified state, as indicated by Urea-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, equilibrium chromatography, and amino acid analysis. The amino acid composition was characterized by the absence of free -SH groups, high half-cysteine, and the absence of tryptophan and methionine in isoinhibito...

Diversity in 113 cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp] accessions assessed with 458 SNP markers

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers were used in characterization of 113 cowpea accessions comprising of 108 from Ghana and 5 from abroad. Leaf tissues from plants cultivated at the University of Ghana were genotyped at KBioscience in the United Kingdom. Data was generated for 477 SNPs, out of which 458 revealed polymorphism. The results were used to analyze genetic dissimilarity among...

Triple inoculation with Bradyrhizobium, Glomus and Paenibacillus on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] walp.) development

The use of microorganisms to improve the availability of nutrients to plants is of great importance to agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of triple inoculation of cowpea with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and rhizobia to maximize biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and promote plant growth. The experiment was conducted in a greenhous...

Antioxidant activity of the extracts of some cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp.) cultivars commonly consumed in Pakistan.

The present investigation has been carried out to determine the antioxidant activity of the methanolic extracts obtained from four cultivars of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp.) seeds. Phenolic compounds present in the extracts showed the antioxidant and antiradical properties when investigated using a linoleic acid peroxidation model, FRAP, ORAC and TRAP assays, as well as DPPH, hydroxyl, n...
